I'm being the assistant scoutmaster in a scoutmaster capacity today. I have a couple of my scouts taking Citizenship to the world and cinematography. The prior is an Eagle Scout requirement. The iPad came in handy for citizenship research. iPad does pictures but the camera work best in daylight. Low light settings are a challenge for such a little lens.
Klondike Derby is next weekend. After two years of freezing my tuckus off, I have a tested tent and gear that should sustain warmth throughout the night, Friday.

Spring 2010 Mar. 29th, 2010 @ 10:58 am
Hey kids,
School is insane busy.

The boys and I went to Bristol Motor Speedway on the first day of Spring, 2010. We took lunch and enjoyed it from the B side (old school Bristol lingo.) Parked in a great place to park and rode the bikes to the gate. We forgot our drinks on the bikes and had to go back to get 'em. It was a fun race. Ethan said he yelled as loud as he could and still couldn't hear himself over the roar of the engines. They had an old timer's race after the 250. There was a scary moment when Larry Pearson got T-boned in turn 2.

I was surprised because they were racing without spotters. But thankfully Larry was only knocked unconscious. He was sent to the local hospital and was (relatively) okay.
Then we went out to ride back to the truck, but I falied to lock Dylan's bike with mine and Ethan's. Minor oversight that resulted in some scoundrel absconding with his ride. A downer but we have a backup bike at home which I put some front brakes on and a new seat. So he's good to go now but what a crappy way to end such a good day. D said, "That bike had the pegs on it!" Birthday ideas pop in my head.
I have an opportunity to go on an exquisite mountain bike ride (of which I passed on last year to do the "day of service") or do the day of service in my hometown. Now each has its bennies, the bike ride is gorgeous scenery in western North Carolina. It's the Burnsville Metric. Now the Day of Service gives me a day with my friends, too. And we get fed breakfast, lunch, and a chance to get some free DisneyWorld tix, to boot.
So I pose the question to you (mind you I love to bike, and I love free food,) what would you like to do. Votes will be tallied and a post-event blog with pics will be posted.
Have a happy spring :)

Hey.  I haven't posted in a long time.  Lazy.  But, I have a good excuse.  For the past week, I've been sick.  I feel pain in places I haven't felt pain before.  Now my DW has it and I'm playing nurse for a change.  But I'm still feeling sick. :P
Crappy way to spend spring break.  And what's the deal with ETSU having spring break IN FREAKIN WINTER?  At least I have the weekend to recover.
The boys are with Naby this weekend.  Princess Sparkly Butt is a strep carrier so she has to stay home.
I'm thinkin' go to bed time.

My favorite teacher.  Our family is now on a journal kick where we pick topics out of a hat and write about them.  Tom Headley recently retired from ETSU as the Broadcasting Director.  He didn't care how you got the video, just that it looked good when you were done in post editing.  That was the toughest thing, getting it good enough with 10 year old equipment.  We tried to get the effects with the equipment we had but it always looked campy.  Looking back now, I can see what he saw.  But he could see the effort and appreciated it.
It was a treat to see him again and work in the same building.  Recently I discovered his daughter died five years ago so he adopted his granddaughter.  But last week she passed away, too.  I could only imagine what it must feel like to not only bury your child but your children's child as well.  That is not how he envisioned his retirement beginning, I'm sure.
My prayers are with him.
» Summertime done come and gone, my, oh my!
Well, if it isn't summer again.  You sneaky little season of shortness.  Why is it when everything is going well, I have nothing to blog.  Or when I do have something to say, I never have time to blog about it.  Thank goodness for Twitter.
Few weeks ago we saw Phish in Knoxville, Tennessee at the University of Tennessee.  It was a good show but surprised me they didn't play Rocky Top.  Last Friday, we saw Casting Crown at Freedom Hall.  Quite a different setting altogether.  I'm sure CC plays the same setlist every show, unlike Phish.  We went to Taco Bell before the show, got a great parking place that allowed us to exit without any traffic, then went to Starbucks for some dessert before going home.
Saturday, the boys mowed the lawn before we all went to Fun Expedition for a while.  I went to the batting cages and stayed there for about 15 minutes.  We had lunch at El Matador and a milkshake for everyone from the free milkshake coupons we got at the previous night's concert compliments of Chik-Fil-A.  The milkshake was more than I could fit comfortably in my stomach.  Four tacos and a drink should have been my limit but the strawberry shake was so goooood I couldn't stop myself.
After Chik-Fil-A, we came home for an afternoon of swimming in the pool in our backyard.  My friend from work, Joe, had invited us to his retirement party Saturday evening, so our family went.  We hardly knew anyone there.  First son was pushing daughter on a tire swing and pushed her into the tree trunk.  She went into her wail/cry/I'm hurt, I need attention mode.  Everyone turned to see what the problem was.  I tended to play with the kids.  My wife left with our son because it was getting past his bedtime.  Kids are more fun jumping on a trampoline than sitting around talking with people about the weather.  After about 20 minutes of jumping, I was glistening in sweat and decided to exit for some hydration.  What I believe happened next was 2nd son gave daughter a "power jump" when he pushed down on the trampoline and it came up while she was coming down.  She didn't have her legs bent and wasn't ready for it.  So she screamed and screamed.  I noticed almost everyone had little concern for her because they'd heard her cry earlier and this was typical girl "who cried wolf."  At first, I thought her hand was tangled in the springs, so I rushed over to free her hand.  That was not the problem.  Her hand freed easily from the edge of the tramp.  She said her leg was hurt.  I told her to come to the edge of the netting so I could console her.  I took her to a nearby set of steps and held her for about 3 or 4 minutes.  When I got her up to try and stand on her feet, I noticed her left leg was not like the right leg.  I took out my cell and called baby doll to tell her she'd have to come get us and take up to the ER.  I had a feeling she'd fractured her leg.  God was watching out for my wife, for she encountered no red lights on her cross-town trip to pick us up.
At the ER, the most wonderful attendant, Paul, cared for us all.  He had very good bedside manner.  He put a splint behind Taryn's leg and wrapped it in an ace bandage.  The X-ray showed her Tibia was completely fractured and the ulna had a hairline fracture.  When we were released, Paul gave my daughter a very plush teddy bear.  I'm' sure he doesn't do that for all his patients, so it was a very kind gesture.  We were given a prescript for tylenol with codeine so we went to the only 24 hour pharmacy in town, and strangely enough, I didn't hit any red lights AGAIN on the cross-town trip, nor any on the way home.
Today, the doctors re-set her bones in place, then inserted three pins to keep them where they are so the fracture can heal all the way through in the right setting.  She's sporting a very brigh pink, hard-as-rocks cast and is watching a lot of TV and catching up on her books from the library.
The doctors say she will have to come back in a few weeks for more X-rays, removal of pins and cast, and hopefully she can get a cast that is waterproof that allows her to SWIM?!?!?  Isn't medical technology mind-bogglingly superior to when we were kids?
» Newth
3rd son got his first evah tooth yesterday. One day short of 9 mo old.
Went to the dance tonight and I am so stiff and out of practice. How am I going to look at the Phish concert??
We had Pratt's BBQ for dinner.   You can't miss the place.  It's got a whopping huge naked indian (well, almost naked) in front of the restaurant.  And on the inside is some of the best BBQ in the area.
LOL, someone twittered that Friday the 13th when watched backwards was a story of a magical hockey player who brings teenagers back to life.

» Dunk 'em
We had such a good weekend. What was left of the baby came out in a natural miscarriage. We even took it out and looked at it. The cartilage was inside the sac. We cut it open to find it. Now we're going to bury it in the backyard because flushing it seemed heartless.
MIL came in this weekend from Denver (Centennial) and gave a great talk on the Holy Ghost at my two elder son's baptism. Yep, I got to baptize two boys in one ceremony. DW felt I may have held them underwater longer than needed. I just made sure all the air bubbles were gone so there was no doubt they were fully immersed. After that, we had a reception and later went to Golden Corral for supper. I loves me some salmon and steak.
I even got to confirm them as members of the church and gave them the gift of the Holy Ghost on Sunday. The youngest son also had a baby blessing and his name given that would be known on all the church records.
My parents came to church Sunday, and I bore testimony in the meeting. 2nd son got scripture from MIL. He took one of the bookmarks out just because he could. I asked to see his scriptures to see what chapter it was set to. It was Mosiah 18 in the Book of Mormon:
8
And it came to pass that he said unto them: Behold, here are the waters
of Mormon (for thus were they called) and now, as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another’s burdens, that they may be light;
9
Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses
of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be
in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered
with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life—
10
Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?
11 And now when the people had heard these words, they clapped their
hands for joy, and exclaimed: This is the desire of our hearts.
This is Mormon, a prophet of God, on the run for his life from King Noah, preaching the word of God in the wilderness and baptizing with authority from Him in the American continent around 145BC. What inspired verse. A part of me wished my father would hear this and be desire to be baptized.
I thank you for all your kind prayers. Feel free to share your favorite scripture with me.
» fetus don't fail me now
DW is prego again.
Ah, baby's first utrasound was yesterday. It was not what we expected. Based on her last cycle, she should have been around eight weeks along. But the fetus was quite small and no heartbeat was found. Which leads to two possibilities: One - Her history of difficult pregnancies from her previous marriage has come back to haunt her, or Two - The conception date is weeks past when it was first calculated. Dec 23 was the day she pee'd on the stick and we got a positive. It may well be that she concieved only days or hours before. We will not know for some time. Our next ultrasound is next Monday, but even then it may be too early to hear a heartbeat - the one thing that will guarantee DW will stop worrying about the baby. And my heart tells me everything will be fine.
So. The baby ticker in the last blog may be a couple weeks off. If the new calculations are right, she should arrive the first or second week in September. Another Virgo in the house? What are we gonna do then? There's already two. Can it handle a third?
And it's inagural day in DC. Congratz to Obama. And my school is closed along with offices, so I get a bona-fide snow day with pay. =D The kids school was on a two hour delay for the longest time, but after regular school hours came, they made the call to the TV stations that they would be closing for the day. SNOW DAY!
So, I sent the kids out to play. They'll come back in soon and we'll play electronic banking Monopoly! Thanks Grama Terry.
This a hungry dad signing off to make some hot cereal.
